TNT has announced that former Law & Order star Angie Harmon will be starring in the upcoming series RIZZOLI.

Based on the novels of Tess Gerritsen, RIZZOLI is about Jane Rizzoli, a Boston Homicide detective that works with Medical Examiner Maura Isles. Isles has not yet been cast.

Warner VP Michael Wright sees Harmon as a good fit: “Angie Harmon is not only a terrific actress, but also a favorite of crime drama fans. She will bring a combination of toughness and sensitivity to the challenging lead role. We’re thrilled to have Angie on board for what could be an outstanding addition to TNT’s collection of strong female characters.”

Janet Tamaro is writing. Tamaro has previously worked on CSI: NY, SLEEPER CELL and BONES, among others. The pilot will be directed by Michael M. Robin. Robin’s resume includes THE CLOSER, TRUST ME and NIP/TUCK.

TNT is really ramping up their original programming and doing a good job at it. Shows like LEVERAGE, SAVING GRACE and THE CLOSER are quite good. They have a number of shows in development. Add to that the fact they are in negotiations to acquire SOUTHLAND.

As NBC fails more and more at dramas, TNT could well replace them as one of the top homes from dramas.
