Variety reports that Fantastic Four‘s Johnny Storm, Chris Evans, has been offered and accepted the coveted role of Captain America in director Joe Johnston’s upcoming movie.

Evans’ contract, which his reps are finalizing, calls for him to star in at least three Captain America movies, starting with The First Avenger: Captain America, set to premiere July 22, 2011.

Evans would also play Cap in The Avengers, Marvel’s 2012 all-star event also starring Robert Downey Jr. and Edward Norton as Iron Man and The Hulk respectively. Variety reports that Cap is likely to appear in cameos in other Marvel movies to maintain the feel of all the heroes coexisting in the same universe.

The First Avenger: Captain America is being written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. It will reportedly be an origin story with Hugo Weaving playing Cap’s super-powered Nazi counterpart, Red Skull.

I have to say I wasn’t much impressed with Evans as The Human Torch, and Captain America has always seemed too much of a goody-goody. Then again, I had no idea Iron Man would be one of my favorite movies of 2008, superhero or otherwise. Here’s hoping I’ll be pleasantly surprised again.

According to The Hollywood Reporter on April 1, 2010, Gossip Girl‘s Sebastian Stan has been cast as Cap’s sidekick, Bucky Barnes. Insiders say Stan has signed for five or six pictures, which may indicate Bucky will take over for Steve Rogers, as happened in the comics.

On April 6, 2010, World of Superheroes relayed an endorsement of Chris Evans as told by Marvel’s Joe Quesada to Comic Book Resources:

“Here you have a guy who absolutely embodies every aspect of ‘Captain America’, including the look and feel of the character. Kevin Feige was absolutely beaming after meeting with Chris and seeing what he could do, and I’ve got to tell you, I think he’s perfect as well.”

On April 15, 2010, Zap2it.com’s Rick Porter reported that British actress Hayley Atwell (at right) had been cast as Steve Rogers’s love interest, Peggy Carter. Atwell starred in AMC’s remake of The Prisoner last year.

On June 6, 2010, CinemaSpy.com reported Stanley Tucci had been cast as Dr. Abraham Erskine, creator of the Super Soldier serum that transforms Steve Rogers. Tommy Kee Jones’s role as Col. Chester Phillips, who recruits Rogers into Project Rebirth, was reported in the same article and confirmed by Marvel June 28.
