With success of the Bourne films, it was only a matter of time until another of Robert Ludlum’s characters made moves towards the silver screen.

MGM has purchased the film rights to The Matarese Circle.

U.S. agent Bradly Scofield and Russian agent Vasili Taleniekov have been enimies for years. Each is responsible for the death of one close to the other. When an organization of assassins, known as The Matarese, emerges, the two are forced to work together to stop the group.

Denzel Washington is slated to play Scofield.

The original story is set in the middle of the Cold War, but film will be sent in modern day. I would guess, based on the age of Washington, that these two will have been nemeses during the cold war.

Michael Brandt and Derek Haas are handling the writing duties. The two are responsible for 2007’s impressive remake of 3:10 to Yuma…and 2 Fast 2 Furious. Their writing will next be seen in the Angelina Jolie/James McAvoy thriller Wanted.
