Ryan Reynolds, star of the upcoming Green Lantern live-action movie, narrates this documentary profiling the early comic book companies that formed today’s DC Comics. More time is spent on DC’s three most enduring superheroes—Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman—but the program surveys the Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Modern Ages of Comics, rises and dips in the medium’s overall popularity, including comments from such current writers as Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Mark Waid, and Geoff Johns.
The DVD does not include chapter selection or special features, but it may be worth a rent for onlookers wondering what all the fuss is about comics. Die-hard comics fans may want to own it, though they probably knew their favorite characters’ histories by heart.
