Owen McDonnell stars as Sergeant Jack Driscoll, a cop that has been sent from Dublin to the west coast of Ireland, the area from which he came. The position he is taking was held by his father before him. While he initially assumes it will be a quiet posting, he learns quickly that that is not the case.

Jack must reacquaint himself with land of his birth, win the respect of the locals as well and attempt to live up to the standard set by his own father. And while the locals must accept him, he also must come to terms with his new post, one that he did not ask for.

Folks thinking they are in for a quaint procedural series had best think again. Single-Handed is a dark, gritty series that shows that there are secrets and corruption regardless of the size of the community. And this is not a series in which the big city cop and the small town folk accept each other and learn from one another. Jack is pissed off and often refuses to back off when it is suggested he not dig too deep and learn to let secrets lie. He refers to his own homeland as “a cesspit” and goes wherever the case leads him.

I like what I have seen so far. It certainly is not what I thought it would be. It takes the grittiness common in big city shows and brings it to the small town, quite effectively. Set one is worth a look, I think folks will like what they see.

Order Set one of SINGLE HANDED.
