UFC 113 saw the rematch of one of the most debated decisions in recent years. Lyoto Machida and Shogun fought, last October, for five rounds. At the end, most seemed certain that Shogun was about to be crowned Light Heavyweight champion. Not so, as all three judges saw the bout in Machida’s favor.
So now the two squared off once more in front of a very passionate crowd in Vancouver. This time, there was no debating who won as Shogun knocked out Lyoto Machida, in the first round, to become the champion and undisputed number one Light Heavyweight of the world. Going into the bout, there were rumors of more knee problems for Shogun. While his camp denied it, he is on the sidelines with a knee injury that his camp says came during this fight.
In the co-main event, we had NCAA champ Josh Koscheck taking on U.K. bomber Paul Daley with the winner getting not just a title shot at Georges St. Pierre, but the coaching slot opposite him for the twelfth season of The Ultimate Fighter. For all of the trash talking that led up to the fight, the bout itself was pretty low-keyed with Josh riding out a decision win. But it would not be a Koscheck bout without some dramatics. Josh was felled by an illegal knee to the head that, upon replays, appears to have made little if any contact. After the fight, Daley showed very poor judgment when he opted to nail Josh with a cheap shot. Daley has since been fired.
For the most part, the card delivered the goods. Kimbo Slice and Matt Mittrione went to war in a rather spirited, but sloppy, battle that saw Matt submit Kimbo in the second round. Alan Belcher choked out Patrick Cote after dropping him on his forehead. Had Cote landed even a couple of inches higher up, it would have been illegal.

5 Marcus Davis knocked Jonathan Goulet silly (TKO via punches) at 1:23 of the second round.
6 Joe Doerksen choked out (Rear-naked) Tom Lawlor at 2:10 in the second round.
7 Alan Belcher subbed (Rear-naked choke) Patrick Cote at 3:25 in the second.
8 Matt Mitrione stopped (TKO via punches) Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson at 4:24 of the second.
9 Jeremy Stephens got a split decision over Sam Stout.
10 Josh Koscheck scored the decision (Unanimous) over Paul DaleyDecision.
11 Mauricio Rua sent Lyoto Machida to bed at 3:35 of the first with a barrage of punches.
The Behind The Scenes segment takes a look at the original bout and the fallout from it. Personally, I would have liked to have had both guys sit down and talk about what adjustments they made after having faced each other already.
The bouts of 113 delivered more often than not and MMA fans should find this worth the money.
