Film Review: WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS

WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS
Directed and Written by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement
Starring Jemaine Clement, Taika Waititi, Jonathan Brugh, Stu Rutherford, Ben Franshan

It’s really too bad that this delightful and clever movie seems to only be getting an art house release because I believe it could attract a wider audience than that. Set in Wellington, AU, it spoofs (or should I say spooks) MTV’s long running series, REAL WORLD, mockumentary-style. But this time the residents are all vampires.

The jokes come fast and are mostly clever. This is the gentlest group of vampires you will ever meet. Although they still feed in the time-honored fashion most of it is discreet. All of the genre’s tropes arw present, but most of them get subtlety twisted. Although it’s not fall on the floor funny, it is comic in the way SPINAL TAP is funny.
Sure to be a classic, it will especially be loved by fans of FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS. (which starred Jemaine Clement as well).
Give it a wide release someone!
