I make no secret about the fact that I dig the work of Rian Johnson. His debut film, BRICK, was my pick for best film of 2005 and his follow-up, THE BROTHERS BLOOM, was entertaining even if it uneven. So I am pretty damn pumped for LOOPER, his upcoming science fiction flick.
In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. The film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.
Now TriStar Pictures has released the first pictures from film. These are of Joseph looking menacing and wielding guns. Since he is tangling with Bruce Willis, guns are probably a good idea. Joseph and Rian previously worked together on BRICK (he also made a cameo in THE BROTHERS BLOOM) and I have high hopes for LOOPER.
LOOPER lands in theaters on September 28th.
