Aaron Sorkin is posed to make his return to television. Sorkin is the creator of THE WEST WING, but his last series, STUDIO 60 ON THE SUNSET STRIP, was a fairly high profile failure. Since then, he focused on writing for film and won as Oscar for his screenplay for THE SOCIAL NETWORK.
Now, he will be joining forces with HBO for THE NEWSROOM. The series centers on a cable news anchor (Jeff Daniels), his new executive producer (Emily Mortimer), his newsroom staff (Alison Pill, John Gallagher, Jr., Olivia Munn, Dev Patel, Thomas Sadoski) and their boss (Sam Waterston). Their goal is “a patriotic and quixotic mission to do the news well in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles and their own personal entanglements.” They do this despite conflict with Leona Lansing (Jane Fonda), the CEO of the cable news network’s parent company.

THE NEWSROOM debuts, on HBO, on June 24th.
