Is this a response to Marvel’s AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D?
Deadline has confirmed that after a bidding war, FOX has acquired the rights to produce GOTHAM, a series that explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City famous. In Gotham, Gordon is still a detective with the Gotham City Police Department. At the start of BATMAN: YEAR ONE, Gordon has just moved to Gotham. I would expect the series to begin at that point. It has been made clear that the series does not feature The Dark Knight.
GOTHAM is being developed by Bruno Heller. Heller is best known for CBS’s THE MENTALIST. He also worked on the short-lived U.S. version of TOUCHING EVIL and HBO’s ROME. He is currently producing the Mandy Moore vehicle THE ADVOCATES. That project, which is at CBS, is being described as a TV movie, but the goal to create an actual TV series.
Personally, I think there is a lot of potential here. Gotham has always been presented as a gritty town in which crime has thrived. In the newer BATMAN universal, organized crime rules Gotham. I expect the series to focus on every day crime, with the occasional colorful criminal.
