Misfortune seems to shadow Chicago Police Detective Superstition Davis. In a short span of time she’s accused of professional misconduct and widowed when her husband is murdered by a Mexican narcotics cartel…and now she’s risking her life to infiltrate the cartel and prevent a cache of unearthed Nazi weapons from wiping out half the population of North America. You’d think it couldn’t get any worse. But then a botched U.S. Special Forces raid kills the family of the cartel’s enforcer, sociopath Jimmy Garcia. He wants revenge—and he wants Superstition to pay.
Rarely are female protagonists written with such unapologetic grit. Superstition Davis is smart, shrewd, potty-mouthed, and a hell of a lot of fun to read. When you first meet her she’s flashing her goods on Rush Street in Chicago, trying to hook a John in an undercover prostitution sting. Deeply flawed and highly relatable, she’s driven by rage, resentment, and grief through life-threatening sequences. Her disconcerting but human dialog and inner thoughts are laced with wit and humor. Her inner struggles and the story’s endless action keep you glued to the pages. Superstition is that uncommon female character who embodies the nightmare of living the American dream, revealing truths about society’s dark values in a way that makes you question your own. You won’t be able to get her out of your head.
