HBO has announced that it has purchased True Blood. Based the “Southern Vampire” novels by Charlaine Harris (author of seventeen mysteries as well as the Sookie books), the series is set in Louisiana. In this series, vampires generally live off of synthetic blood and thus spend very little time trying to feed off of unsuspecting innocents.

The main character is Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a waitress with the ability to read people’s minds. She falls for a vampire named Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer).

Anna Paquin first came to the big screen with her Oscar winning performance in The Piano. She has since appeared in the X-Men films, Almost Famous and HBO’s acclaim mini-series Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. She can be seen in Michael Dougherty’s Trick r Treat, which hits theaters on Oct 5th.

This will be the second HBO series for Executive Producer Alan Ball; he was responsible for the critically praised series Six Feet Under, which ran on HBO from 2001 to 2005.

No word has been given as to how many episodes were ordered or when it will debut.
