Word comes that veteran actor James Gammon has passed away.

Gammon died Friday surrounded by his family at his daughter’s home in Costa Mesa, where he and his wife, Nancy, had been living. He had cancer of the adrenal glands and the liver.

Mr. Gammon appeared in over 60 films as well as 50+ television shows, but he is best known as Lou Brown in MAJOR LEAGUE. Lou manages the Cleveland Indians to the pennant, but his first scene is classic. The Indians GM calls him with the job offer and finds Lou less than enthusiastic. Lou was a minor league manager and was working at Tire World. Charlie Donovan (Indians GM) calls him at Tire World:

Charlie Donovan: How would you like to manage the Indians this year?
Lou Brown: Gee, I don’t know…
Charlie Donovan: What do you mean, you don’t know? This is your chance to manage in the big leagues.
Lou Brown: Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

Mr. Gammon was a well-respected supporting actor that appeared in SILVERADO, URBAN COWBOY, COLD MOUNTAIN and made his film debut in COOL HAND LUKE. He was a regular opposite Don Johnson on NASH BRIDGES where he played Johnson’s father (Despite just a nine year age difference).
