Alan Stanwyck (Tim Matheson): If you reject the proposition, you keep the thousand – and your mouth shut.
Fletch (Chevy Chase): Does this proposition entail my dressing up as Little Bo Peep?
Alan Stanwyck: It’s nothing of a sexual nature, I assure you.
Fletch: Yeah, I assure you.
Alan Stanwyck: One thousand just to listen? I don’t see how you can pass that up, Mr…?
Fletch: Nugent. Ted Nugent.
Before I go any further, let me make it clear that the use of FLETCH for the Monday Movie Quote is by no means a suggestion that it is a great film. I realize there are fans of Gregory McDonald that hate this film and would likely come looking for me.
No, FLETCH is not a great film, but it does have some good dialogue and makes use of one of Chevy Chase’s strengths (ok, his only strength): the ability to remain straight-faced no matter what.
I love the Little Bo Peep line and have used it more than once.
Loved that line as well. And the Ted nugent reference also. I was a young man heavily into the Motor City Madman at the time.
As much as I love the novel, I submit that this is a great film, and welcome all challengers (and by "welcome," I mean, "will summarily ignore").
-Everything a joke to you, Fletch?
-Everything, Sam.
Fletch was a flawed adaptation, but deservedly won an Edgar for Best Screenplay. Chevy Chase didn't fit the character's physical description, but his wit was right on. Each year that goes by without a Fletch remake may be proof that it can't be done any better.
