Oplev to direct Marcus Sakey’s GOOD PEOPLE.

GOOD PEOPLE appears to be taking a big step towards becoming a motion picture. In early 2009, Actor Tobey Maguire acquired the film rights to the novel by Marcus Sakey.

Now word comes that Maguire will indeed star as well as producing. On top of that, Niels Arden Oplev is on board to direct. Oplev has garnered praise and awards for the Swedish THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO.

A family, and the security to enjoy it: that’s all Tom and Anna Reed ever wanted. But years of infertility treatments, including four failed attempts at in vitro fertilization, have left them with neither. The emotional and financial costs are straining their marriage and endangering their dreams.

Then one night everything changes. Offered a chance at a future they’d almost lost hope in, they seize it. One simple choice. A fairy tale ending.

But Tom and Anna soon realize that fairy tales never come cheap. Because their decision puts them square in the path of ruthless men. Men who’ve been double-crossed, and who won’t stop until they get revenge.

No matter where they find it.

I asked Markus what he thought about Tobey and Oplev and he was more than happy to offer his thoughts. “I’m fucking giddy, Marcus said.” Tobey Maguire is picture-perfect casting, a great blend of everyman and intensity. And Niels Arden Oplev blew the doors off The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Plus, the script is by Kelly Masterson (Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead), and it kills.”

As Marcus said, Kelly Masterson wrote the screenplay. Kelly is a hell of a good screenwriter and, by all reports, did a hell of a good job on this one. I can’t wait to see who else comes on board. So far, so good!
