Phillip-Seymour-HoffmanPhilip Seymour Hoffman
July 23, 1967 – February 2, 2014
My first memory of seeing Philip Seymour Hoffman on screen is the small role he had in Scent Of A Woman. He played a privileged rich kid used to getting his way, that guy we all knew in high school who did what he wanted and always came out on top. Funny but at the expense of others.
I saw him do similar roles a few times. He was great at it. And then I started to see more and more of him, supporting roles, and eventually starring roles. I was amazed by his work in Capote, I loved him in Twister and Big Lebowski and Rum Punch Love. Pirate Radio? I re-watched his scenes over and over.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was in incredibly gifted actor who came across as a very likable guy in interviews.  He always looked happy, like life was a ride he was enjoying everyday. Only 46 years old and it looks like a drug OD. It’s a damn shame. My sympathy to his family and friends, but also to all his fans, who like me will always wonder what other wonderful things he may have done.

It seems incredible, and incredibly sad, that someone as talented as Philip Seymour Hoffman has been taken from us so young. Of course I loved him in classics like Capote, The Talented Mr. Ripley and Almost Famous. But he also brought so much to the screen in smaller films like “State and Main,” where he plays an affable and put-upon novelist who is trying to break into the movie writing business. Hoffman does nothing less than shine in a cast of other great character actors, like William H. Macy. It’s a great little film, fun and humorous, and probably one of my favorites that he has done. Truly, whenever you saw the name Philip Seymour Hoffman on the credits, you knew that you were going to get some quality acting. The movie might not have always been amazing, but at the very least you were always going to get a great performance. He was a wonderful character actor, subtle and deliberate, and my heart is heavy wondering what great roles we will never get to see him in.
