Once again, there is movement to bring The Preacher to the big screen.

The Preacher is a fantastic series of Graphic Novels

The acclaimed graphic Novel series The Preacher has had its ups and downs with Hollywood.

At one point James Marsden (X-Men, Enchanted), a big fan, was slated to star in a film version. Then, when that died, it was being looked at as a potential series for HBO.

Now it looks to be back on track for the silver screen…at least until it falls to the wayside again.

Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead) is interested in directing. Mr. Mendes has experience with comics/graphic novels, having done a bang-up job on the film version of Max Allen Collins’ excellent Road to Perdition.

The title character is a down and out Texas preacher that becomes imbibed with the incredible power of Genesis, an entity that is the result of the coupling of an angel and a demon.

Upon finding out that God has apparently abandoned his duties in heaven, the Preacher heads out, across country, to confront God. His ex-girlfriend and an Irish vampire (with a fondness for liquor) accompany him.

“It’s brilliant, it’s an incredible twisted vision. There’s so much of it you couldn’t possibly fit it all into one movie. It’s just about what you keep and what you leave out, and how you structure the story. But just to have that toy set again, being able to paint on a big canvas and to say ‘I am gonna do crazy crane shots and massive action sequences again because I want to,’ it’s exciting.”
But, a script is needed. Jon and I talked about it at Muskego, and Jon was skeptical it could be trimmed down to one film, or at least one GOOD film.
The Preacher series kicks ass. Every time news comes out, I get pumped, only to watch things fall apart. Maybe this time things will actually come together…but I am not going to hold my breath.
