Progress??? The Preacher gets a writer.

For what seems like an eternity, there has been plans to adapt the graphic novel The Preacher for either film or television.

Each time, things have fallen apart.

The latest plans actually seem to be getting some traction.

In November, I mentioned that Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead, Road to Perdition) was interested in developing The Preacher into a film.

Now The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that screenwriter John August has been signed to handling the writing duties.

August has recently been working with Tim Burton on films such as The Corpse Bride, Charle and the Chocolate Factory and the planned film of the 1960s series Dark Shadows.

The story is about a Texas preacher that becomes imbibed with the incredible power of Genesis, an entity that is the result of the coupling of an angel and a demon.

Upon finding out that God has apparently abandoned his duties in heaven, the Preacher heads out, across country, to confront God. His ex-girlfriend and an Irish vampire (with a fondness for liquor) accompany him.
