Before even getting to begin it’s second season, the crime drama SOUTHLAND has been offed by NBC. The show was slated to start season two on Friday, October 23rd.
The show initially did well in the ratings and garnered praise by critics, yet NBC is sporting five less hours of primetime (because of Jay Leno’s new show) so space is at a premium. SOUTHLAND has six episodes in the can, but it is not known whether or not those eps will be aired.
Today, cast member Michael Cudlitz shared his thoughts with EW.com:
I’m pissed off. We had all the pre-season stuff, all the dinners and parties. They told us they loved and believed in the show. They said the [delay] would be good for us. On paper it all made sense so I was willing to believe I was being told the truth… I don’t just walk in one day and go, “Eh, I’m not going to act today. I know I told you I was going to act, but I’m not going to do my thing.” But I guess because they own the ball and the ballpark they get to do that. It’s kind of cheap.
Exec producer John Wells’ reaction was a bit more…diplomatic and he expresed hope on finding a new home for the show.
Wells to THR:
“I’m disappointed that NBC no longer has the time periods available to support the kind of critically-acclaimed series that was for so many years, a hallmark of their success. We remain extremely proud of ‘Southland’ and are actively looking for another home for the series.”
I think that either FX or TNT would be a great home for SOUTHLAND. At a time where network television is trending towards non-scripted shows, basic cable is embracing drama and taking home more and more awards for them.
SOUTHLAND was well-regarded, but does not have a big name cast so the cost should not be too high. TNT is losing SAVING GRACE next season, this would be a solid replacement.
This sucks. I really enjoyed the first season.
In my opinion NBC made a big mistake with moving the Leno show. From what I can see the viewing public wants dramas and scripted shows. Reality shows are on their last legs and NBC is going to be suffering for their lack of good programing.
Man, i fucking loved this damn show. I live in LA and the way Wells shot this, it was fantastic. Fuck NBC for cancelling such a good show, i was anticipating season 2, i looked all around and finally came up on this when i see it didnt air. Obviously, NBC would rather have reality shows and nonsensical garbage parading all over the network. Fuck you NBC. Thanks for ruining my fall.
The NBC decision to cancel Southland is testimony to the monumental stupidity that continues to run the NBC network.
NBC has this great show Sothland with prospects to jump into ER kind of success yet flushes the entire show, which was doing well and was highly acclaimed, out of PURE GREED AND EGOTISM.
Jay Leno!? A guy say he wants to retire but you are so greedy you just can't let him go. So you sledgehammer him into a prime time slot killing Southland and other hard working shows? It's Jay Leno's ego (an entirely separate rant!) and NBC's greed. Where's the logic? There is none.
So let's summarize Mr Smart NBC Guys. What do you have now? A whole lotta nothin! Jay is back at 11:30. Giant HOLE in prime time. Conan gone. Giant HOLE in Conan's old slot. NBC is out $44 Million – Hold on my sides are hurting from LAUGHING SO HARD! And most painful to me – Southland is gone. BOY are you guys so much smarter than the rest of us.
TNT is going to beat your dead corpse with it's ratings and revival of Southland.
