A Conversation with Anthony Neil Smith

I’d wanted to have a conversation with Anthony Neil Smith for a long time. He has written some of the meanest and most visceral crime novels I’ve read in the past 5 years.  I asked a couple of mutual friends about him and the both said things along the lines of “You’re both a couple of mean spirited fucks, You’ll get along famously.” [ANS: Names and numbers, please.] I got in touch with Anthony [ANS: Call me “Neil”] and I could tell he was hesitant to do an interview with me. The impression I got was that’s he’s a guarded man and for good reason. Like many others including myself, he’s...

Noir at the Bar: Twin Cities

Last night the New Hope Cinema Grill hosted the second Noir at the Bar event ever held in the Twin Cities. After the wonderful reception the first event received from the crime fiction loving Minnesota crowd, a second event was less of a question of “if” and more of a question of “when.”   At the first event, it was announced that attendee Anthony Neil Smith’s novel HOGDOGGIN was set to be shot as a feature film directed by event host Paul von Stoetzel. His company Killing Joke Films has partnered with event sponsor Pounding Heart MultiMedia for the film. Of course last night’s NatB featured readings from a fine variety of published...

Paul von Stoetzel’s Killing Joke Films, in conjunction with Pounding Heart MultiMedia, have acquired the rights to Anthony Neil Smith’s HOGDOGGIN’. Killing Joke has previously mined crime fiction for shorts (Dennis Tofoya’s HOW TO JAIL, Jediah Ayres’ VISCOSITY), but this is their first time tackling a novel. Paul was introduced to Neil by Tofoya and was immediately interested in his work. “I’ve been looking for the first crime adaptation to direct and that this one is absolutely prefect. You can allude to the fact that there is always the possibility of adapting the sequel as well and even a...

Noir at the Bar Minneapolis

Editor’s note: The term Noir at the Bar was actually coined by noted crime fiction blogger Peter Rozovsky. While Jedidah Ayres has worked hard to promote it, we wish to give credit where credit is due. Minneapolis bar Merlin’s Rest was home to a slightly different show last night than the neighborhood British pub usually is privy to. While the regular customer will come in for a pint of Guinness or a plate of Scotch eggs, what they got last night was a group of published and award winning mystery writers reading their short stories to a packed room of fans. Noir at the Bar is a term coined by St. Louis based author Jedidiah Ayres....

The Great Psychobilly Blog Road Trip of 2008: Day ...

One of our favorite humans on the planet, Anthony Neil Smith has been driving around the country and defacing books, usually with his signature, and usually only in books he wrote. This travelling death squad (death to mediocrity!) is pulling into Milwaukee and Neil has hacked his way into Crimespree Central and left this for you: Last stop: Seth Harwood’s Crib So far, the total we’ve spent in gasoline equals pretty much all the advances of my first three novels. And we’re not finished yet. A cry for help out of Milwaukee. The problem? A general sense of malaise. The solution? Joining our road trip. But as a large number of...
