Interview with C.J.Box

Mike Barson: We are now 18 volumes along in the Joe Pickett saga, and he and the girls seem to be aging almost in real time. How old are you prepared to let Joe get? Hopefully the Wyoming Game Service doesn’t have an enforced age limit for its wardens. C.J.Box: As you know, the novels happen in real time and Joe Pickett is now 52.  Not all of the books take place a year from the last (sometimes they’re a few months from the previous book or even back-to-back) so I foresee Joe Pickett going for a long time.  I think when Joe Pickett is ready to retire I likely will be as well. MB: The ecological issue in this novel involves both eagles...

INTERVIEW with C.J. Box

Michael Barson: While this is only the second novel to feature your serial killer the Lizard King as the lead villain, it also features characters who appeared in the two previous Cassie Newell thrillers. Did you conceive of this work as a trilogy from the beginning? CJ Box: Not really. I don’t work that far ahead. When the Lizard King and Cassie Dewell were introduced in THE HIGHWAY (and appeared again in BADLANDS) I wasn’t planning an epic concluding novel. Both of those books (as well as BACK OF BEYOND, the first of what has become known as “The Highway Quartet”) stands alone. I don’t think of the four books as a series as much as four...

REVIEW OF C.J. Box’s VICIOUS CIRCLE

VICIOUS CIRCLE C.J. Box March 21st, 2017 G.P. Putnam’s Sons VICIOUS CIRCLE by C. J. Box is not the usual mystery/thriller novel. It is reminiscent of the classic old-time western with “High Noon” coming to mind. Besides an intense plot, readers get a flavor for what it is like to live on the Western frontier of Wyoming. Box noted, “The way the previous book ended, I knew Dallas and Brenda Cates will be back, because I made sure to set up a dilemma. It has many of the elements of a classic Western. The bad guy gets out of jail and sets out for revenge, making sure it is personal. He attacks Joe’s family forcing him to protect them even if it...
