ARCHIE #1 with Kate (and Dan)

FADE IN… Dan and Kate are grabbing a burger and chocolate banana malt at a local burger joint. The malt is better than the burger, and the joint’s kitschy interior is trying too hard. But it’s a fun time. K: Look at all this Happy Days type junk on the wall. Hey isn’t that Howdy Doody? D: How would I know? ::looks:: Yup. That’s Howdy Doody. K: You look kinda bored. D: I just don’t like when things try too hard. It comes off as disingenuous, you know? But if things are really clicking? Everything is in synch and natural? Yeah, that’s the good stuff. K: Are you talking about Art, Life, or that chocolate banana malt you just polished off...

The Fox #1 with Kate (and Dan)

::Dan sits slumped deep in a comfy chair:: D: ::mumbles:: What a weird day… What a really, really, weird day. ::Kate stumbles through the front door, looking all a mess:: K: SWEET JESUS LORD WITH WHIPPED CREAM AND JIMMIES! D: What the hell? K: This was the most bizarre, jacked up day I’ve ever had! D: You too? And here I thought I was the only Malmon here that got into a fight with that cymbal-playing monkey… K: There was no percussion-playing monkey doing battle at my work today. But it just seemed to be one weird mess after another. Some days I end up specializing in weird. D: Our mutual battles with hordes of crazy bring to mind this...

The Crimespree Invasion of C2E2: The Kate (and Dan...

::Kate walks into the office, sees nothing but a giant fort made of comic books:: K: Dan? Are you in here? D: Yeah, I’m right here. K: Hello? D: I’m right here – IN MY GIANT FORT OF COMIC BOOKS! <duh duh DUH> ::drawbridge of trade paperbacks lowers to reveal Dan sitting on a throne of back issues:: K: Wow. That’s impressive. D: I had to do something with all of our loot from C2E2. And really, who doesn’t want to hang out in a comic book clubhouse? K: Are girls allowed in your clubhouse? D: Only if you promise not to ruin the comics by crushing them or getting make up on them. And don’t break the bindings. Or take them out of the bag...

Daredevil #25 with Kate (and Dan)

::Dan hops around the office in shiny shorts and Everlast boxing gloves, floating like a wounded duck, stinging like week-old sweat socks:: K: What’s up there, Sugar Ray? D: …left jab, right cross…That’s right…left jab, right cross… K: Nice form, Muhammad Ali. Dare I ask what you’re up to this time? D: Working on the ol’ footwork here. ::dance, dance, tangle, fall:: … DAMNIT! K: ::hands on hips, taps foot:: I ask you again, Rocky. What are you up to? D: ::pulls out DAREDEVIL #25 from pocket of silk robe:: All good “Men Without Fear” are down with the sweet science. Me, I just tend to fall down. K: Daredevil, eh? I do seem to recall Ben...

RUSE – classic detective stories in a comic Mar24

RUSE – classic detective stories in a comic

No I’m not talking about Image, it was another company called CrossGen. They steered away from the superhero and did comics that were more adventure based. The art was nice and strong storytelling, but I never really got into it.  Until one Christmas my wife bought me a trade collection of a book called RUSE, a detective in the tradition of Holmes. Two volumes were put out before the company ceased publishing. Now Marvel Comics has acquired the CrossGen line and RUSE is back. Original...
