TRUTH ALWAYS KILLS and Thoughts of Gary Shulze

TRUTH ALWAYS KILLS and Thoughts of Gary Shulze by Rick Ollerman My latest book, TRUTH ALWAYS KILLS, was dedicated to Pat Frovarp and Gary Shulze, the former owners of that fine Minneapolis independent crime fiction bookstore, ONCE UPON A CRIME. Unfortunately, we lost Gary to leukemia just last week, just days before I was due to hold a signing at the store on a date that Gary chose himself. I never imagined he wouldn’t be there to see it. The book itself isn’t particularly Gary-like, other than that he appeared to like the thing. He sent me an e-mail saying how much, and that certain lines stayed with him, and he quoted a few of them back...

Once Upon A Crime Found a Buyer Mar01

Once Upon A Crime Found a Buyer

We’ve found a buyer! Hard to believe, but here we are. After 7 months of backs and forths with potential buyers, Once Upon a Crime is about to have new owners. We’re both excited and saddened by this news. We’ll miss the store, authors, and especially customers as we hand over the care and feeding of Once Upon a Crime on April 1 (we’re not fooling) to a new and enthusiastic generation. This date is – coincidently – the 29th anniversary of the store’s founding in 1987. Why not hold out until the 30th anniversary next year, you may ask. Good question. Short answer is “because it’s time”. Running an independent book store is hard,...

OUR TRIBE by Kristi Belcamino

We are happy to present a new on going column in CrimeSpree: Our Tribe from Kristi Belcamino. She’ll be introducing people from the mystery community who are a big part of our tribe, though not necessarily writers. OUR TRIBE: Getting to know peeps in the crime fiction world By Kristi Belcamino   Long before I ever had an agent or book deal I would visit Once Upon a Crime bookstore in Minneapolis and dream of seeing a book I wrote on the shelves. So, when I did get a book deal, I immediately approached the owners, Pat Frovarp and Gary Shulze, and asked if I could hold my book launch party there. This gem of a bookstore is small,...

Once Upon A Crime For Sale

Once Upon a Crime is up for sale Pat and I have come to the difficult decision that it’s time for someone else to own Once Upon a Crime. The major factor in this decision is time – we’re not getting any younger. And speaking for myself,  given that I’ve been undergoing cancer treatments since last October, I’m not getting younger at a faster pace! We’ve owned OUAC for 13 years as of Aug.1, and the store continues to thrive. My cancer relapse certainly is a motivating factor to sell, but regardless of that, we knew that the day was coming soon that we would have to. We just hope there is someone out...

FALLEN ANGEL by Chuck Logan

FALLEN ANGEL Chuck Logan October, 2014 Conquill Press I’ve been in this business now long enough to know that I’ll never figure it out. Why Chuck Logan’s Fallen Angel couldn’t find a home in traditional publishing is beyond me. Chuck, after shopping his manuscript around, was finally advised just to let it go and move on. Then Millennium Pictures re-optioned Logan’s Homefront and green-lighted a feature film, which encouraged Logan to self-publish Fallen Angel as an eBook in December 2013. It took local upstart Conquill Press to actually show some editorial intelligence and gumption by bringing it out in this impressive trade...
