Film Review: ONCE I WAS A CHAMPION

Ok, I have to admit, I didn’t know who Evan Tanner was until he died in 2008. It wasn’t until around that time that I really started paying attention to MMA. It was over a year ago that I heard about this documentary for the first time. Saw the trailer, read a couple articles, knew I needed to see it. I had learned who Evan Tanner was since his death. I had gone back and watched some of his fights and read some of his writing. Evan Tanner was not even close to the stereotypical MMA fighter. He was more of a mystic shaman, Jim Morrison-esque searcher/ writer/ rock star. God, that is such a clichéd way to describe the man but I...

UFC®: Ultimate Fight Collection 2011 Edition

Anyone that knows me knows that I am a hyooge MMA fan. So while the UFC is not crime related, I have no qualms about talking about them both on the blog and in the magazine. This 20 disc set contains fights from UFC® 116 – UFC® 131, UFC® Fight Night 22-24 and UFC® Live 2-4. While the numbered shows are released on DVD, the Fight Nights and Live (Versus) shows are not so this gives fans a chance to own quality copies of many awesome bouts that won’t be...

So long, Chris Lytle, thanks for the memories.

Folks that regularly read this blog know that I love Mixed Martial Arts. Sunday night, Chris Lytle showed just what is so special about this sport. On Saturday night, while walking onstage for his weigh-in, he gave UFC president Dana White a letter. That letter thanked Dana and co and announced that his Sunday bout about against Dan Hardy would be the last of his career. “I’ve been fighting since ’98, fighting forever, a lot of it is just that I’m not doing my responsibilities like I need to at home,” he said. “I feel like I’m not being the type of dad I want to. I got four kids and lots of times I...

DVD Review: UFC 129

Anchor Bay Release date: July 5th, 2011 MSRP: $19.98 Up until the main event, UFC 129 was looking like one of the truly great UFC shows. The Roger’s Center was loaded with 55,000 fans that were loud and passionate and the card had, up to that point, delivered some memorable bouts. Then the main event happened and it went flat. UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre defended his title against Jake Shields in what was, by any measure, a disappointing bout. While some of that can be attributed to an inadvertent eye poke, in the second round, that left GSP with vision in just one eye, the champ was exceedingly cautious and seemed...

DVD Review: UFC – THE BEST OF 2010

Anchor BayReleased: March 29th, 2011MSRP: $19.982010 was a notable year, both inside the cage and out, for the UFC. In UFC: The Best of 2010, we are treated to some of the best or, in some cases, more notable matches of the 2010 (Hence the title of best of 2010). This set is not just a list of fights, each weight class has it’s own section with narration, highlights and summaries of other bouts in that class. Some fighters (GSP, Matt Hughes for example) get their own little featurettes.LightweightUFC 119: Sean Sherk vs. Evan DunhamUFC 110: Joe Stevenson vs. George SotiropoulosBonus LW bouts:UFC 108: Cole Miller vs. Dan LauzonUFC 117:...
