Literary agent Isabel Reed has been up all night reading—not so uncommon, really, given her job, but this manuscript is different.  This manuscript, titled “The Accident” was delivered by courier, the author is listed as Anonymous, and it has Isabel’s full attention.  Because if what the manuscript says is true, then the billionaire head of a huge media conglomerate, Charlie Wolf, has some terrible secrets in his closet—secrets that involve former presidents and members of the CIA.  And none of those people will want these secrets to come to light, but especially Wolf who wants to make a bid for a Senate seat. When Isabel finds her assistant dead with a gunshot wound to the head, it becomes obvious to Isabel that her life is in danger—as is the life of everyone who has seen a copy of this deadly manuscript.  It’s a race against the powers that be as Isabel tries to stay one step ahead of those who want to silence the story, at any cost.

Pavone is fresh off an Edgar and Anthony win for his debut novel THE EX-PATS, and here he brings us yet another stunning thriller.  The action takes place over the course of one day with wonderful pacing and pieces of the puzzle teased out over the course of the book.  For readers, it’s also an interesting look into the publishing industry, where Pavone worked for many years.  The main characters in this taut and suspenseful tale are well rounded, flawed and human, with some beautifully sketched supporting characters as well.  Pavone’s prose is at once descriptive and lyrical—he uses alliterative phrases that punctuate his point or roll blissfully off the tongue—some of them just begging to be read aloud.  I think this is a powerhouse of a follow-up novel containing plenty of fantastic surprises along the way to make for an enjoyable read.  Be sure to pick a copy up.
Pavone is also currently touring the U.S.  Check to see if he is coming to a city near you!
