With one week before the debut of TREME, we thought it would be appropriate to introduce folks to some of the chacters and the actors behind them. Over the course of the next seven days, we will give you a look at the various characters that inhabit this wonderful new world that David Simon has put together.
Davis McAlary is played by Steven Zahn.
Davis is based on real-life musician/dj Davis Rogan. Davis (Treme’s Davis) is described as:

a rebellious radio disc jockey, itinerant musician and general gadfly, is both chronicler of and participant in the cityʼs vibrant and varied musical culture, which simply refuses to be silent, even in the early months after the storm.

Watching the early episodes, it is clear that while Davis is very smart, he is impulsive and has a short temper that gets him into trouble. Also clear is his love of both music and New Orleans.

Davis has an on/off relationship with chef Janette Desautel (Kim Dickens).
Steven Zahn is a local boy (Twin Cites) and made his acting debut in a little known 1992 film called Rain without Thunder. His breaktrough was in 1994 in REALITY BITES with Winona Ryder, Ethan Hawke and Ben Stiller. He has has appeared in OUT OF SIGHT, THAT THING YOU DO, YOU’VE GOT MAIL, SAHARA and RESCUE DAWN. He earned an Independant Spirit Award and a Sundance Film festival Special Jury Prize for 1999’s HAPPY, TEXAS. Steven has, in my opinion, a hell of a lot of talent and I think the TREME is going to give him a much-needed chance to show some of that. He is played a number of silly, fun roles (OUT OF SIGHT, STUART LITTLE, YOU’VE GOT MAIL) and has shown that he has charisma, but TREME will show his actual acting stills.

Steven describes Davis as

“really smart deejay guitarist songwriter. But he’s really an infamous guy there, and is – you know, angry and bitter, but is just really eccentric. Kind of the voice of the jazz scene, you know? He’s their spokesperson.”
