Kelli is a coydog (half coyote, half golden retriever) that we found in the desert, not far from our house, on our daily, early morning walk, when she was just a few weeks old.
She’s an absolute slave driver. If I’m not at my desk, writing (where I’m supposed to be. Always.), she’ll follow me around the house barking and nipping at my heels while she tries to herd me back to my office, which is her absolute happy place because when we’re there, it’s just the two of us (we have eleven dogs—yes, I said eleven—and most of the time it’s just too much community for her). She has the softest, most luxurious fur you’ve ever felt in your life which is her curse because everyone who sees her wants to pet her and she absolutely hates it.
She’s afraid of the dark and full sends herself off the porch steps rather than try to untangle their trickery. She hates hot dogs (that’s how you know she’s weird) and falls into a deep depression every time I leave the house (even if it’s only to check the mail) and greets me at the gate whenever I come home, no matter how late it is. I joke that I’m her emotional support human and she’s my writing coach but really, it’s not a joke. Every word I write is a testament to her diligent pursuit of solitude—even these.
Maegan Beaumont is the award-winning author of the Sabrina Vaughn thriller series. Her debut novel, CARVED IN DARKNESS was awarded the 2014 gold medal from Independent Publishers for outstanding thriller as well as being named a Foreword Book of the Year finalist and Debut Novel of the Year by Suspense Magazine. When she isn’t locked in her office, torturing her protagonists, she’s busy chasing chickens (and kids), hanging laundry and burning dinner. Either way, she is almost always in the company of her seven and a half dogs—her truest and most faithful companions—and her almost as faithful husband, Joe. She also writes hot contemporary romance as USA TODAY best-selling author, Megyn Ward.
