In Case of Emergency by E. G. Scott is a medical thriller. E. G. Scott is a pseudonym for Elizabeth Keenan and Greg Wands who published their first book, The Woman Inside, together last year. This is where they introduced the police detectives Silverstri and Wolcott.

The detectives have another puzzling case.  They ask Charlotte Knopler to ID a body and it throws her for a loop…she has never met the victim, yet she is listed as the Jane Doe’s emergency contact. Her life once again turns upside down after Charlotte becomes the main suspect in the death of this woman she does not know. He best friend Rachel Sherman suspects that Charlotte’s mysterious boyfriend, Peter Stanton, has something to do with the accusations.

Charlotte’s backstory remains a mystery as the authors offer tidbits throughout the book.  It seems that she was a neurosurgeon who is forced to quit medicine after a tragedy. Now turned acupuncturist and alternative healer, it appears her past as a surgeon has something to do with being implicated in a murder. As things start to spiral out of control, Charlotte begins to wonder about Peter, a mysterious new boyfriend who has asked that their budding romance remain a total secret. Their relationship has been forged through texts and emails, often in code, since Peter says he works undercover for the government. Charlotte decides to find out the truth launching a parallel investigation to the one being conducted by the detectives.

This suspenseful story had many threads that come together through the various narrators. Once again, the detectives showed their investigative skills.

Elise Cooper:  Why did you decide to write together?

Elizabeth Keenan:  Greg and I have been friends for over two decades.  We met in college and then found out we both wrote on the side.  There was this perfect timing in both of our lives and decided to write this project together.

EC:  Why this story?

EK:  It was borne out of a few different elements.  Greg wrote these amazing detective characters for the first book, and knew we wanted to do another case they had to crack.  Also, we had the Long Island setting because Greg was so familiar with it.

EC:  Why acupuncture?

EK:  It was inspired by my experience. I swear by it and highly recommend it. Charlotte switched from western medicine to Eastern methods. We thought about why someone would make such a drastic change.  It uses healing from plants and flowers.

EC:  Are you making a statement about technology?

Greg Wands:  We try to have a social issue in each of our books.  With the first novel, we talked about the Opioid epidemic.  In this book, we want to get into the effects of technology.  Who can someone really trust and are they who they say they are?

EC:  How would you describe Charlotte?

EK:  She is very conflicted about her past with a mysterious and secretive life.  Charlotte is susceptible to alpha male personalities.  She is constantly questioning herself and is very self-aware.

GW:  Liz wrote her with the feeling that her life now has more stability.  She is coming to terms with her past.  Then suddenly she is yanked back that causes an internal tug of war.

EC:  What is her view of Peter?

EK:  She finds him exciting.  Deep down she knows he is not the person she thinks he is.  I think she goes through the whole spectrum of feelings:  Fantasizes who he is, builds him up, and then has a reckoning.

EC:  What about the relationship?

GW:  She enjoys not being in a real relationship because she can control this one. Charlotte only acts with Peter online.  She is one of those people that initially believed what she was told on social media, basically not having any suspicion of disbelief. But as she started to dig into his life she finds out things about Peter that he did not want her to know.

EC:  How do the detectives work together?

GW:   Silverstri transferred to Long Island from NYPD.  He and Wolcott form a professional bond and a friendship.  Both have a mutual respect professionally and then form affection for each other after working together for a while.

EC:  A shout out about your next book?

GW:  Silverstri and Wolcott will be back in the same setting.  The plot has a woman’s book club that meets along with a men’s poker game.  The women drink too much and the men end up dead.

THANK YOU!!
